The Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) is developing a digital twin of India’s rural water-supply infrastructure, integrating asset and resource data to improve operations, maintenance and local water planning. The proposed system will digitally map infrastructure from water sources and treatment facilities through pipelines and storage assets to household connections.
Under the Sujalam Bharat digital framework, water-supply schemes and associated assets are being assigned digital identities and geo-tagged to create a unified view of rural water infrastructure. The system is designed to improve traceability, lifecycle monitoring and infrastructure management.
A decision-support platform will also bring together data on rainfall, aquifers, runoff and other water-related parameters. This information is intended to support gram panchayats in assessing water availability, demand and potential deficits through localised water budgeting.
Artificial intelligence could further support predictive maintenance by identifying potential infrastructure and supply issues before they affect services. Data will remain with State governments while being visible through the national digital ecosystem.
The technology push forms part of JJM 2.0’s shift from infrastructure creation towards sustainable service delivery, operation and maintenance of rural piped-water systems.
